I learned very early on in my writing career that you should never fight against what wants to come out.  (When I say you I mean me).  By that I mean that if you want to write a rock anthem and what starts coming out is a bit of bluegrass or reggae or whatever, just go with it and don’t try and force it, it never ends well.  Of course if you’re being paid to produce something specific that’s something else entirely.  If you try and force it the chances are that you’ll end up with nothing and you’ll have wasted your time.  If you go with it you won’t end up with what you wanted but you will end up with a product you may not know what to do with but you will have something that you’ll be able to use one day.
